Rock Block is an inclusive nine-week Saturday afternoon music education program for students of all music levels, ages 10 – 17, to develop the art of playing music and forming a band.
Each week, participants will have instruction on the instrument they have selected (bass, drums, guitar or vocals), participate in workshops about music and the role music has and continues to play shaping community, and band practice.
Instructors lead participants to favor collaboration over competition, create community and be comfortable having open and transparent conversations around inclusivity. They are also an encouraging guide while challenging youth to expand their musical skills and knowledge. Examples of some of our hands-on workshops are: stage presence, zine making, band promotion, synthesizers, music genres, and music as a media for creating and advocating for an inclusive community. Students are placed in a band based on instrument of choice, experience, and availability. Bands decide the style of music and lyrics for their songs, their name and all the other creative elements that go into collaborating for success as a band.
